Foi hoje defendida a tese de doutoramento de Rui Boaventura intitulada "As antas e o Megalitismo da região de Lisboa".

Este trabalho possuí, a meu ver, dois aspectos que devem ser realçados: - o árduo trabalho de rever dados antigos; - o estudo dos restos osteológicos. Neste caso, para além do estudo dos ossos, procedeu também a um conjunto de datações e análises isotópicas que são fundamentais para a compreensão da génese e evolução do Megalitismo.

Abstract:
This monograph presents the prehistoric use of Poço Velho caves from a tripartite perspective. First of all there is the history of the discovery and the excavations in 1879 ( António Mendes - Carlos Ribeiro) and the new and last excavations in 1941 (Abreu Nunes), the comments on the caves in scientific circles and the entire troubled history of the site. Secondly, after presenting the structure of the various descriptive items for the archaeological material, there is the description and commentaires on the objects and artefacts. The third part includes the absolute and relative chronology (13 radiocarbon dates), establishing comparisons with the main monuments and sites, with particular emphasis on those in the Cascais region. Finally, there is the integral inventory of the material, now housed at the Instituto Geológico e Mineiro Museum and at the Conde Castro Guimarãres Museum, and a bibliog…

Abstract:
"The Porto Covo and the Poço Velho prehistoric caves (Cascais County), were excavated in January and February 1879, both part of the Portuguese strategy for the Congrès International d`Anthropologie et d`Archéologie Préhistoriques, IX éme Session, which was to be held in Lisbon the following year. It was excavated by António Mendes, by order of Carlos Ribeiro.
In this book we will show not only bones and pottery, but also an extraordinary document, previously unknown: António Mendes`report on the distribution of tasks among the workers, allowing us, for the first time, to understand how an archaeological excavation was carried out in Portugal in the last quarter of the 19th century (.../...)
The Porto Covo cave was certainly, and without a shadow of a doubt, a burial chamber...a small burial chamber containing seven individuals. It is certain that were three women and two children…

Conjunto de 4 grutas escavadas na rocha, intervencionadas em 1878 e 1907, na sequência da sua destruição, parcial, por uma pedreira. Recentemente reestudadas por Joaquina Soares.
